My vocal journey: A path of discovery and mastery
Explore the personal and professional journey that shaped The Field of Voice, from initial passion to advanced mastery and the philosophy of awakened singing.
The beginning: Music and Law intertwined
My journey with the voice began in the Netherlands, at a time when music and law coexisted side by side. While studying Dutch Civil Law at Tilburg University, I started my vocal training—drawn to the expressive power of the human voice. After graduating in September 2003, I chose not to leave that passion behind. Instead, I continued studying singing privately, shaping my artistic development alongside my work as a lawyer.
Turning points: Mastering the technique
A first turning point came in 2010. I attended a masterclass with Dutch soprano Miranda van Kralingen and reached the finals of the national television competition Una Voce Particolare, performing “On the Street Where You Live.” At that stage, however, I became aware of an important technical limitation: I had not yet mastered key Bel Canto principles, such as lowering and tilting the larynx. This insight led me to focus on repertoire that suited my voice at the time, including classical musical theatre and the American Songbook.
Deepening the foundation: London and Bel Canto
In 2015, I made a decisive step and moved to London to broaden both my artistic and personal horizons. There, my vocal development took a significant turn. I connected with Patricia Rozario OBE FRCM at the Royal College of Music, whose teaching reintroduced me to the Bel Canto tradition in a profound way. Around the same time, I began studying with Hamish Pitceathly, one of the last pupils of Maestro Herbert-Caesari, author of The Voice of the Mind (1951).
Through this work, I developed a deeper technical foundation: learning to access the higher register through an open throat and a correctly tilted larynx—unlocking a freer, more resonant voice.
In September 2018, I began a Postgraduate Diploma in Music Performance at Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music & Dance in Greenwich, while working part-time as a legal assistant in the City of London. During this period, I performed in several masterclasses, including the prestigious Jette Parker Young Artists Programme masterclass.
Evolution and awakened singing: From Netherlands to Curaçao
I graduated with distinction in the summer of 2020.
The global Covid pandemic brought me back to the Netherlands, where new opportunities followed. In 2021, I appeared as a semi-finalist on the national television talent show ARIA (Omroep MAX). In 2023, I won first prize on the television program Ranking The Talent (SBS6). A personal milestone came on June 28, 2024, when I performed at Carnegie Hall in New York City.
Since July 2022, I have been based on Curaçao in the Dutch Caribbean—a place where my personal, professional, and vocal journey continue to evolve.
The Field of Voice is the expression of this path: a space where technique, awareness, and artistry come together. It is grounded in the understanding that the voice is not just an instrument—but a field of possibility, shaped by body, mind, and experience.
